When my kids where little Christmas was always a special time of the year. We would make cookies and cakes to share with those from church and neighbors. One Christmas the banks were giving out huge dolls if you opened an account with them. Someone from the neighborhood gave us the doll to give to my youngest daughter for Christmas. Tom and I finished putting all the gifts under the tree and had set the doll against the wall for Kathy to see when she got up Christmas morning. We had labeled it, From: Santa. Feeling that this Christmas would be one to remember, off we went to bed. It wasn’t long before we heard a scream that would set your teeth on edge. We popped up and then were hit by a tiny child’s body flung across our laps as arms and legs struggled to wrap themselves around us. Kathy sobbed, “Santa left an Elf under the tree.” No amount of coaxing would make that child go out to see that the “elf” was a doll just for her. The “elf” finally had to be banished to the garage before any of us could have Christmas that morning. The “elf” sat on a shelf in the garage for some time before she had anything to do with it. This is not the typical “Elf on the Shelf” story but one our family has not forgotten. Christmas is a magical time of the year. This is the season for Hope, Charity, and Love. I hope all these things for all of you. May your season be as Merry and Bright as the songs we sing make us feel.

Dad wrote this tonight about his love, Bev:

Pretty Blue Eyes

One starry night, a young man was riding in the back seat of his friend’s car. The guy looked over at the young girl who was sitting next to him. She looked up at him and the moon glittered off the prettiest blue eyes he had ever seen. Cupid’s arrow struck, thanks to those Pretty Blue Eyes.

A few months later the young man stood nervously at the front of a church. A young lady in white slowly walked towards him. A short time later he heard her say “I Do”. With trembling hands he lifted her veil. What he saw next caused his heart to catch in his throat. Pretty blue eyes full of love were looking right at him.

The young man walked into his house one afternoon. His beautiful wife bounced up to him, eyes sparkling with excitement as she announced that their household would soon number three. Once again his heart overflowed with joy as he looked down at those Pretty Blue Eyes.

Time sailed happily along as their family grew from three to four and finally five. The young man’s soul was continually filled with pride as he listened to the laughter of his children and, at the end of each day, cuddled up next to his lovely bride and looked lovingly at those Pretty Blue Eyes.

The years—how they flew. High school graduations and college came and went. Also, marriages to attend. But, the so-called empty house was not really empty, the man realized. His wonderful wife was beside him every day still looking up at him with those Pretty Blue Eyes.

Today the man sits surrounded by friends and relatives. Tears fill their eyes. Those Pretty Blue Eyes are now shut, never to open on this earth again. But we take comfort because as she approaches the Pearly gates, we know a gentle voice will say, “Welcome Pretty Blue Eyes”.

– Marvin Ramsey

Bev’s daughter-in-law, Katrina, wrote this poem for her:

best scrabble score
yummy last bite
warm comfy poppies on a cold winter night

Vitamin D sunshine
never burn or glare
fast forgotten worries
many laughs to share

see ya’ later kisses
Happy Thanksgiving
then catch the hand of her Best Friend
next happy land of living
